Tambopata Reserve - Peru

While Peru's northern Amazon (around Iquitos) suffers from extensive deforestation and growing population, the southern preserves of Tambopata and Manu remain untouched primary habitat for abundant wildlife. Tambopata's accesibility and biodiversity make it the least costly entry into the Amazon. The world's largest macaw and parrot clay lick is a full day's journey deep into the Tambopata rainforest, where the headwaters of the Amazon river have created a paradise of biodiversty. Tambopata is home to 90 species of mammals (including 8 species of primates!) and 600 species of birds.

Activities in Tambopata include the macaw lick and nesting sites, oxbow lakes, canopy tower, hiking and wildlife viewing on rainforest trails and motorized canoe trips up the headwaters of the Amazon river, ecological and medicinal gardens  and meetings with local shamans.

Our lodges are owned in partnership with the local Infierno tribe and have been widely recognized as an outstanding model of ethical eco-tourism partnership. These lodges include the world famous Posada Amazonas (PA), Tambopata Research Center (TRC), and the newly constructed Refugio Amazonas.
