Costa Rica Ultimate Wildlife Eco-Tour
Type: Rainforest Lodges and Boutique HotelsOur Ultimate Wildlife itinerary specializes in small, one-of-a-kind rainforest
and jungle lodges, many of which have been featured on the Discovery Channel,
Animal Planet, and in top travel magazines such as Travel & Leisure and Conde
Naste Traveler. Great care has gone into our selection of lodging partners, with
particular emphasis on lodges that offer outstanding wildlife viewing opportunities.
These breathtaking lodges offer all the comforts of home, including hot &
cold water, flush toilets, tastefully decorated beds (often orthopedic with Guatamalan
fabrics), and delicious home cooked meals, sometimes extravagant, always healthy,
and catering to special dietary needs.
Aviarios del Caribe
Aviarios Sloth Refuge Adopt-a-sloth at this world-famous Sloth Wildlife Refuge,
featured on Animal Planet, Jack Hanna's Animal Adventures and the
Discovery Channel. A privately owned wildlife sancturay, Aviarios
protects over 120 acres of the Estrella River delta. This extremely
bio-diverse habitat is home to nearly 300 species of birds and a wide
variety of mammals including a troop of howler monkeys that live in the
rainforest surrounding the lodge. Because of an unusually large
population of sloths, Aviarios is at the forefront of scientific
research dedicated to the conservation and rehabilitiation of sloths.
They are the only researchers who have been successfully able to
document this mysterious animal's mating habits.
La Quinta Country Inn
La Quinta de Sarapiqui This gorgeous riverside rainforest lodge is one of very
few certified by the Costa Rican National Accreditation Commission for
Sustainable Tourism. Set on 9 acres, the lodge features delightful
private cabins, a pool, extensive naturalist library, authentic Costa
Rican restaurant, frog and butterfly gardens, ponds and extensive
trails. Meals are typical Costa Rican with a festive BBQ flair. La
Quinta is conveniently located near the Sarapiqui and Puerto Viejo
Rivers and La Selva Biological Preserve.
Villa Decary
Villa Decary Universally raved about in every guidebook, Villa Decary
is set in a remote location in the hills overlooking lake Arenal, with
Arenal volcano at one end of the lake, and Monteverde Cloudforest at
another.
Villa Decary's spacious rooms have their own entry, private tiled
bath, as well as their own balcony with scenic views overlooking the
lake, rain forest and mountains. The rooms, accented by colorful
fabrics from Guatemala and pottery lamps made by the Chorotega Indians,
all reflect the workmanship of local Costa Rican artisans who have
crafted the fine wood doors and furnishings.
Trapp Lodge - Monteverde Cloud Forest
Trapp Lodge The closest lodge to the Monteverde Reserve, Trapp is
built in a classic mountain lodge style, with rich hardwoods and
magnificent cloudforest views. Inside, you'll feel like you're in the
Swiss Alps, as its mountain decor and spacious suites showcase one of
the newest and best built lodges in Monteverde. Owned and operated by
Costa Ricans, you can't get any closer to the cloudforest reserve than
this acclaimed lodge. Recent Wild Planet trips were delighted by a
nesting pair of Resplendent Quetzals only 50 meters from our panoramic
windows!
Posada Canal Grande
Posada Canal Grande This beautiful boutique country inn is located on a mango and coffee plantation only 20 minutes from the international airport and 45 minutes from San Jose. Exquisitely decorated, Posada Canal Grande is exactly the kind of lodge that makes Wild Planet Adventures different. While many other companies use standard hotels by the airport or in smog-filled San Jose, our partner lodges -- even those close to the airport-- are steeped in character, close to nature, and immediately make you feel like you are in a special place. For a country as breathtakingly beautiful as Costa Rica, anything less wouldn't be up to Wild Planet standards. Posada Canal is perfect if you are
arriving early or staying a day late and need a clean, quiet hotel in a
safe area close to the airport (we make the arrangements for you at our
special rate.) The owners are an
incredibly friendly and helpful Italian couple with a flair for
old-world asthetics an decor. On a practical level, Posada Canal is a
quiet oasis by the airport, which gives it a distinct advantage over many of
the hotels around the airport or in San Jose, which are either right on the street and
quite noisy, are commercial chain hotels with little character or
charm, or are in areas that are simply not as safe or convenient. |
