South Africa

South Africa Wildlife Safari Experts

South Africa is home to many popular National Parks such as Kruger, many of which are heavily traveled by tourists for traditional “Big 5” safaris (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino). However, South Africa is also home to a few remote and little-known reserves that feature extraordinary rare animals, high-end safari lodges and very few travelers. The southern Kalahari, due to its location and local climatic conditions, receives more rain than the central Kalahari, allowing it to support a large diversity of life. It is for this reason that the southern Kalahari is frequently referred to as the “Green Kalahari” – this is the home of Tswalu Kalahari Reserve, South Africa’s largest private game reserve, covering an area of over 100,000 hectares. Tswalu Reserve is twice the size of Pilanesberg National Park and bigger than the entire Madikwe reserve. It is MALARIA FREE and offers sightings of some of South Africa’s rarest and most extraordinary wildlife, including Desert black rhino, Black-maned Kalahari lions, Meerkats, Cheetah (easily viewed in the open savannah), rare antelope such as roan, sable and tsessebe; totaling over 70 species of mammals and 230 species of birds. It is one of the best places in Africa to see the elusive aardvark, aardwolf, pangolin and porcupine, as well as 2 colonies of habituated meerkats, which allow for up-close viewing of these adorable animals. The southern Kalahari is the ancestral home of the San people (Bushman). Some of their ancient engravings can be seen at Tswalu; current research suggests these may be amongst the oldest art on Earth.

South Africa - with Uganda: 14 Days of Insider's Africa: Meerkats, Gorillas & Africa's Rare 5

This is the ideal second safari to Africa for travelers who have already seen the “Big 5”. We start in Uganda with Gorilla trekking, where in typical Wild Planet Adventures’ style we’ve made special arrangements to spend 2-4 times the traditional amount of time in intimate contact with Gorillas, guided by scientific researchers, plus safaris for Chimpanzees, tree-climbing lions, mongoose and more. We continue to South Africa and a convenient stop at a very remote private reserve in the little-known savannah of the “Green Kalahari” for Meerkats, Pangolin (scaly Anteater), Aardwolf, Aardvark, and Cheetah, the best place to see some of Africa’s rarest animals. This is an incredibly unusual combination of truly “once-in-a-lifetime” safaris that feature scientific researcher-led up-close wildlife interactions for Meerkats, Gorillas, Chimps and Africa’s Rare 5.   Learn More>
